IHSA relaxes photography policy for state tournaments

The Illinois High School Association on Friday relaxed a policy that had required news photographers, before being granted access to state tournaments, to sign waivers stating their news organizations would not resell photos to the public.

At last weekend's girls gymnastics and wrestling state finals, the IHSA had enforced a policy that required media photographers to sign the waivers. A photographer representing the Tribune at the girls gymnastics meet did not sign the waiver and was blocked from the floor. At the instruction of editors, the photographer left.

"I don't know if it's permanent," said IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman of the change at the girls state basketball semifinals. "But what brought it on is this: We received word [Thursday] that we would be receiving a proposal from the Illinois Press Association to try to resolve this issue.
