IHSA relaxes photography policy for state tournaments

The Illinois High School Association on Friday relaxed a policy that had required news photographers, before being granted access to state tournaments, to sign waivers stating their news organizations would not resell photos to the public.

At last weekend's girls gymnastics and wrestling state finals, the IHSA had enforced a policy that required media photographers to sign the waivers. A photographer representing the Tribune at the girls gymnastics meet did not sign the waiver and was blocked from the floor. At the instruction of editors, the photographer left.

"I don't know if it's permanent," said IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman of the change at the girls state basketball semifinals. "But what brought it on is this: We received word [Thursday] that we would be receiving a proposal from the Illinois Press Association to try to resolve this issue.

Tri-City Herald award-winning photography

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico Many teachers in Puerto Rico ignored a call to strike Friday, but public schools across the island canceled classes anyway as students stayed home.

Less than a quarter of the U.S. territory's 500,000 students reported for classes on the second day of the island-wide strike, according to Education Secretary Rafael Aragunde, who repeated his call for parents to continue sending their children to school.

The union representing Puerto Rico's 42,000 teachers called the strike after a breakdown in negotiations over demands for higher salaries, smaller classes and more autonomy for individual schools.

Author tells Clifton's story with a camera

CLIFTON -- For an English major with no formal art training, Sandra Giordano is doing well for herself in the world of photography.

Giordano, 38, shot the photographs for her new book, "Clifton: Then and Now," the latest in a series on city history.

The book features historical photographs of Clifton buildings and parks a century ago compared side by side with their present-day counterparts.

In "Then and Now" Giordano details some of the ornate architecture of Clifton's downtown buildings.

"When you live here all your life, you walk past these buildings on Main Street and don't notice them," she said.

Released last week, the book is the third volume about Clifton in Arcadia Publishing's "Images of America" series (those sepia-toned paperbacks stacked in the history section of Barnes & Noble).

Huffman remains steadfast in art of film photography

Jack Huffman of Florence has been interested in photography since Cadillac offered V12 and V16 models and Chrysler offered its first V8 in the early 1930s. So it was a no-brainer when he retired from GE in 1991 that he would start a new career in photography. He went to a photography class at Florence-Darlington Technical College that was taught by Joe Lewis. He learned how to develop black and white film and color slides. Then he bought a medium format Mamia 645 and started following Lewis around to weddings for on-the-job training. He watched Lewis in action and would then shoot behind him. Two Bronica cameras later, he opened a studio above Kolor Quick. He did studio and wedding photography until closing the studio at the end of 2000. "I enjoyed shooting weddings and landscapes," said the Lynchburg, Va., native who moved to Florence in 1974.

Newspaper Bids Farewell to Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The Albuquerque Tribune said goodbye Saturday to the city it had served for nearly nine decade as it closed in what observers described as the latest newspaper to succumb to the digital age.

Eighteen editors, reporters and photographers hunkered down in front of computer screens to put out the last edition. The final front-page headline read simply, ``Goodnight, Albuquerque.''

The Tribune's circulation had dropped from 42,000 in 1988 to about 9,600; some blamed the advent of an era in which readers increasingly shun ink and paper to consume news online. Its main competitor was the much larger Albuquerque Journal.

The paper's owner, The E.W. Scripps Company, put The Tribune up for sale in August and said it would shut the paper down if a buyer wasn't found.
